Growing up, I always thought I’d be a Pediatrician. My father was so excited that one of his children would be a doctor. I would have been the first doctor in the whole family.
Once I entered college, I quickly learned that math and science were not my friends.
My professors saw a gift in me. It was a gift that my uncle Sherman noticed when I was in the third grade.
I knew that I enjoyed writing, but I didn’t take it seriously. I’d take writing classes as my electives. In 2003, Professor Frank Dexter Brown asked me to see him after class. He talked to me about my writing skills and storytelling abilities. That day, my life was forever changed. He convinced me that my short story/creative writing assignment was worthy enough to be a full book. I took his advice, he became my editor, and the rest was history.
Fast forward to 2020!
Someone recently asked me if it was ethical to be in the coaching business.
The nerve.
Truth is...
I didn’t choose coaching. Coaching chose me!
Here’s what happened...
I built multiple businesses after writing my first book. I turned that book (which is loosely based on my life), into multiple streams in income.
One of my businesses allowed me to make $125,000 in one night. Imagine that—SIX FIGURES in one night and it all started with one book! It takes some people a year, even two or three years to make that.
And just like that...
The emails, DMs on Instagram and inbox messages on Facebook started pouring in.
I met with a countless number of people to share exactly what I did and how I did it.
I’d hear: Crystal, can I treat you to a cup of coffee to pick your brain?
First off, I don’t even drink coffee. But that didn’t stop me from showing up at Starbucks and spending hours of my time helping people brainstorm and come up with an action plan of how to tell their own unique story.
After showing up to coffee dates, lunch dates, dinners and everything else under the sun, my mentor sat me down and had a good talk with me. She sat me down because I was burning the candle at both ends. Not only was I trying to grow my writing business, but I was trying to help others grow theirs! And not to mention, I was meeting people on all sides of town using gas and missing the TV shows that I enjoyed watching at night. LOL

So....I considered all that time that invested as practice. And we all know that practice makes perfect!
